چکیده

A population of Atta cephalotes was surveyed in 1989 and 1991 at the La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica. Nests were mapped along trails that passed through old growth forest. Estimates of basic demographic parameters were examined in relationship to general soil categories, suggesting that colony mortality and natality is related to soil type. Results indicated that the population is increasing at a rate of 22 percent per annum. Based on initial nest size data and on demographic parameters, a complete forest soil turnover time of 200 to 300 yr was estimated. The significance of these results for plant community dynamics are discussed.

Tropical Rain Forest Structure, Tree Growth and Dynamics along a 2700-m Elevational Transect in Costa Rica

Rapid biological changes are expected to occur on tropical elevational gradients as species migrate upslope or go extinct in the face of global warming. We established a series of 9 1-ha plots in old-growth tropical rainforest in Costa Rica along a 2700 m relief elevational gradient to carry out long-term monitoring of tropical rain forest structure, dynamics and tree growth. Within each plot w...

Dispersal of Miconia argentea seeds by the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica

While leaf-cutter ants are thought to collect mainly vegetative plant material, they have also been observed collecting seeds or fruit parts on the forest floor (Alvarez-Buylla & Martı́nez-Ramos 1990, Kaspari 1996). For example, leafcutter ants have been observed carrying considerable numbers of Brosimum alicastrum Sw. and Cecropia spp. seeds into their nests (Wirth 1996) and Leal & Oliveira (19...

Annual wood production in a tropical rain forest in NE Costa Rica linked to climatic variation

Increased atmospheric [CO2] could theoretically lead to increased forest productivity (‘CO2 fertilization’). This mechanism was hypothesized as a possible explanation for biomass increases reported from tropical forests in the last 301 years. We used unique long-term records of annually measured stands (eighteen 0.5 ha plots, 10 years) and focal tree species (six species, 24 years) to assess th...

Snakebite mortality in Costa Rica.

The mortality rate due to snakebite envenomation in Costa Rica was estimated from 1952 to 1993. The highest mortality was observed during the 1950s and 1960s, with the highest rate of 4.83 per 100,000 population in 1953. In contrast, a rate of 0.2 per 100,000 population per year was estimated from 1990 to 1993. The most conspicuous decline in mortality occurred after 1970. The highest mortality...
